Free Fitness Apps to Keep You Motivated

You might be nearing a new year and have your resolutions in full swing, getting in better shape being among them.  You might have a vacation or special event looming in the near future that you want to use as motivation for getting fit.  Or you could be reading this at any time of year, with nothing in particular on the calendar, and you’re simply feeling ready to seek or maintain a healthier way of life.  Regular exercise has been proven to have an incredibly positive impact on your physical and mental well-being.

I don’t know about you, but I can usually use all the motivation I can find.  This motivation can be a fun new workout shirt, a water bottle with a silly message scrawled on it, a great playlist of music, or a fitness app or website that helps me mix up routines to keep things fresh.

Free Fitness Apps to Keep You Motivated

Check out these 7 free fitness apps and mix up your workout routine a little!  All (except Fitness Blender, which is a website) are available for iOS, some are also available for Android.

1. My Fitness PalI swear this app is like the granddaddy of all food tracking and fitness apps.  I remember using MFP ten years ago via their website, long before we ever heard the term “smartphone” or “app.”  True, this app is more of a food/calorie tracker app than a fitness app, but it’s a REALLY good one.  MFP has a very extensive food database.  Use that along with their food barcode scanner and food logging becomes a snap.  I love how MFP integrates with many activity trackers and converts your workouts to calories burned.  I use MFP with my Apple Watch and love how seamless they are!

2. C25K This app is for the person who thinks they might like to try running, for example working up to a 5k.  The name of the app stands for “couch to 5k” meaning it is intended for straight up beginners who are just taking up running.  The app builds your running endurance over the course of 8 weeks.  Workouts are a combination of walking and running until you are running the entire time by the end of the 8 weeks.

3. Map My Fitness by Under ArmourThis versatile app helps you track any fitness, any type, anywhere, any time. You can map a route, record your activity, log your food. You can even share your workout with friends for extra motivation.

4. Map My Run/Walk/Hike/Ride by Under Armour – Similar to the Map My Fitness app, these apps are activity specific.  You can choose from any of the 4 free apps in the workout discipline of your choice.  The app uses the GPS in your phone or Apple Watch to map the route where you ran, walked, hiked or rode your bike.  We have actually used this app while kayaking before and it was really cool to see the route that we paddled around the lake!  Just like Map My Fitness, you can log your food with these apps and also share your workouts with friends on social media.

5. Seven – 7 Minute WorkoutGot 7 minutes? Chances are good – you probably have 7 minutes to spare during your day.  This app takes just 7 minutes to deliver a daily quick-but-challenging workout. Think about this – 7 minutes each day for 1 month (30 days) adds up to 210 minutes or 3.5 HOURS spent exercising. This app breaks it down into very manageable portions which I love.

6. Sworkit This app brings the gym to YOU!  There is so much workout opportunity packed into this free app. You can do a 5 minute cardio workout each day for free.  If you upgrade to the paid version, you’ll get access to guided video workouts with lengths from 5-60 mintues so you can find workouts that fit YOUR schedule.

7. Fitness BlenderOkay, this one is actually a website, not an app.  But it’s so good, I really had to include it in my list of freebies!  Fitness Blender makes it possible to access fitness programs no matter what your budget.  They offer over 500 free workout videos with new workouts released every week. Sort through videos based on difficulty, trainer, body focus, calorie burn, duration, training type and equipment.
