Zaycon Fresh: I Am Getting Parking Lot Chicken

Okay, I’ll just say it: this is a weird post to write. When you hear the phrase “cheap chicken you pick up out of the back of a truck in a local parking lot,” your first thought might be to question the possible lack of safe food handling practices.  Years ago when I first heard about Zaycon Fresh, the concept intrigued me.  However, at that time, Zaycon Fresh wasn’t offered anywhere within driving distance of my house, so I wasn’t able to try it out.

How does Zaycon Fresh work?

Zaycon Fresh delivers fresh meat in a freezer truck (boneless skinless chicken breast is probably their most popular item) from the farm right to the consumer.  By cutting out the middle man (grocery store) they can do two things – pass the savings along to you, the customer, AND they can get that chicken to you faster and fresher than you’ll get from the store.  You place your order on the Zaycon Fresh website as early as possible because they frequently sell out before delivery date.  For example, I placed my order for June pickup earlier this week (April).

How cheap is Zaycon Fresh?  (Like, FOR REAL)

Current price for 40 lbs of boneless skinless chicken breast is just $1.89/lb.  That’s $75.60 for 40 POUNDS of chicken. For a little perspective, our family of 4 typically eats around 1 lb of chicken total during a typical meal.  So the breakdown for us would be $1.89/MEAL and one Zaycon pickup would last us for 40 meals.  THAT’S PRETTY GREAT!

40 pounds is a lot of chicken.  Do you have to buy that much?

Yes, 40 lbs is a lot of meat.  Yes, you have to buy that much as the bulk delivery is part of what brings your price down to that incredible $1.89/pound.  If you have a lot of freezer space, you can freeze your order in whatever quantities you’d like.  If you do not have ample freezer space, consider splitting your order with a friend or family member.

Do you really pick up your chicken in a parking lot?

Zaycon Fresh is literally, a drive-through meat mart. (This is ideal for a mama like me who loathes unloading and loading kids in the car multiple times an outing.)  But yes, you pick up your Zaycon Fresh order without ever leaving your car.  When you place your order, you will see an exact pickup location and timeframe before you complete your purchase. When the day arrives for your pickup, you simply drive to the pickup location and get in line.  Your meat will be kept safe in a freezer truck, so no worries about spoiled meat. When you get to the front of the line, your order will be loaded into the back of your car.  That’s it!

Bucks County, PA and Montgomery County, PA now offer Zaycon Fresh pickup

So this is literally what I had been waiting for – Zaycon to offer a pickup close enough for me to drive without planning a day trip around it. (Because of course, time and gas are money too!) I live in the Philadelphia suburbs (Bucks County, PA) and I found pick up locations in both Doylestown, PA and Bensalem, PA.  Our neighboring county is Montgomery County, PA and over there I see pickup locations in Norristown, PA and Pottstown, PA.
