What Halloween Means to Me

Ghosts, Goblins, Witches, Werewolves… Halloween has a lot of everything spooky, right? And just like any other holiday or special day that happens each and every year, you begin to develop traditions that you look forward to as the date on the calendar approaches. While Halloween brings many happy memories to mind… school parties, looking for the “pumpkin” house, hiding my candy from Dad, trading candy with my sister… there is something that really means Halloween to me.

My mom was always recording strange, random tv movies on clunky VHS tapes for my brother, sister, and I to watch. Anything from The Leftovers starring John Denver to The Horse in the Gray Flannel Suit (a Disney flick). But one year, she recorded… THE WORST WITCH. Making its first television debut in 1986, The Worst Witch is a ridiculously, well, ridiculous, movie in which a little girl named Mildred Hubble, despite her very best attempts, is just a miserable failure at being a witch.
Think pre-Harry Potter for girls, The Worst Witch also features Tim Curry as the Grand High Wizard. There is a part in the movie where Tim Curry performs a music video of sorts… a song which, yes, we memorized and sang over and over. And over.
