Yesterday I reawakened part of my past – and I’m so glad that I did.
On a whim, I decided to stop into our local library. I honestly don’t think I had checked anything out in at least 10 years. TEN. YEARS. But the moment I stepped through those doors, something clicked. It was like coming home.

Rows and rows of books greeted me – shelves stacked with stories and facts and nostalgia. But it wasn’t just books. There were DVDs, magazines, CDs, reference materials, even video games – all available to borrow for FREE. And not just for a couple of days… but for three whole weeks.
I got myself a shiny new replacement library card (because of course my old one had vanished into the void of time) and headed to the card catalog computers. Just like that, I was back in the groove – flipping through genres, hunting down titles, stacking books in my arms like I’d never left.
And let’s talk about the staff for a second – they were incredibly kind. Friendly, helpful, and genuinely excited to share their love of the library with anyone who walked in. There’s just something warm and welcoming about that kind of environment.
After I got myself a replacement library card and made a pit stop at the card catalog computers. I found several books to check out, and even drove Lily through the children’s area, just because I am so excited to take her there when she will really enjoy it.

Libraries Today: More Than Just Books
If you haven’t visited your local library lately, you might be surprised by what you’ll find. Yes, the books are still there – and thank goodness for that. But many libraries have evolved into true community hubs filled with so much more:
- Free kids’ programs: story times, STEM activities, toddler playgroups, teen game nights, and summer reading clubs.
- Makerspaces: 3D printers, sewing machines, recording studios, and more!
- Technology access: free Wi-Fi, public computers, printing and scanning.
- Streaming services and apps: borrow ebooks, audiobooks, and even movies with apps like Libby, Hoopla, and Kanopy.
- Museum and park passes: many libraries offer free or discounted passes to local attractions.
- Book sales, community events, and classes – everything from yoga to resume writing.
Take the Trip – You Might Fall in Love Again
Life is busy. It’s so easy to forget about places like the library when we’re juggling school drop-offs, errands, and everything in between. But I’m so glad I carved out the time to pop in. It reminded me of the simple joy that comes from flipping through a brand-new-to-you book, and the comfort of a quiet place to just be.
So here’s my invitation to you: Go. Just stop by. Even if you only have 15 minutes. Even if it’s been 10 years (or more!). Let yourself wander the aisles. Get a new library card. Pick up a cookbook or a novel or a movie you’ve been wanting to see. Check the bulletin board to see what’s going on for kids.
You might walk out with more than a stack of books – you might just rediscover a hidden gem in your own backyard.
Update: As I sit here writing some updates to this post, a hard-to-grasp 15+ YEARS after I first hit publish on it, I can attest to the amazingness of the library. My kids are now tween-teenagers and we are at the library all of the time.
