It doesn’t matter how much time passes between our trips to Disney… We are always looking forward to the next one! While the countdown officially begins when we book our vacation, things don’t typically hit a fever pitch in our house until we hit the 1 month (or 30 day) mark. This seems to be the time when the trip starts to feel really real. It is getting so close that we know it won’t be long before we hit the road!
How do you build excitement for family vacations?
There have been a few trips we have taken where we managed to keep the entire vacation a surprise from the kids until we arrived at the destination. As you might imagine, this is NOT easy!! Off the top of my head, the two most memorable trip surprises for us were:
Of course, when you aren’t surprising the fam with the vacation news, you can include them in the excitement building!
Some of our very favorite ways to get pumped for a trip include:
- Reading books or travel guides about the destination.
- Watching movies related to the destination
- Making bucket lists of things we hope to see, do, eat and experience on the trip
- Buying or making themed shirts or other accessories
- Making countdowns to tick off the days as they go by
Fun Family Activities to Countdown Your Disney Vacation
We have counted down to Disney Parks and Cruises in many different ways over the years!
Some of them have been:
- Disney and Star Wars movie marathons
- Paper chain countdown
- Picture frame dry erase countdowns (get our printable Disney Cruise or Mickey version!)

Our Disney Vacation Countdown Inspiration
This year, we are FINALLY heading back to the Parks after a LONG, LONG break. We have not been to the Disney Parks for more than 4 years at this point. Our trip originally scheduled for fall of 2019 was rescheduled to 2020 and well.. I’ll bet you can guess how that turned out?
So needless to say, we are very very excited to finally have a trip to Disney in the (very) near future!
Since the kids are a little older this time around, I wanted to make a “fun facts” countdown.
This countdown jar came together very quickly and with minimal effort. You can see how I assembled everything below.
DIY Disney Countdown Jar Instructions
Supplies used for the jar:
- Clear jar with lid
- Vinyl Mickey heads (1 for top, 1 for front… I cut them on my Silhouette. You could also use chalkboard paint markers and draw your own Mickey heads.)
- Scissors
- Disney Fun Facts printable cards (see below)
I printed out the fun fact cards and cut them into individual cards. Each card was folded in half and placed in the jar. I placed a Mickey Mouse ears (heads) on the front of the jar and on the top of the jar. (If you use chalk markers, you can hand draw Mickey heads very easily. Just make a 2″ inch circle (approximately) and then two smaller circles on top for ears.) And if you do not have a chalk marker, grab a black sharpie marker and use that!
I also picked up a Disney Kids’ Travel Guide for each kid and included them in the countdown surprise. Here is how everything looked when it was all set up and ready!
