Incredible Mason Jar Salad Recipes

Mason Jar Salads Are Easy to Prep Ahead

We love mason jar salads for a few different reasons.  First of all, they are super easy to prep ahead of time.  I know that it’s easy to assume that they can only be prepped a day or two before you eat them because the wet ingredients will wilt the lettuce.  That’s where layering becomes essential because if you layer them correctly (by keeping the wet ingredients at the bottom and separate from the lettuce) you can easily make a week’s worth of salads on the weekend and Friday’s salad will taste as good as Monday’s salad.

Best Containers for Mason Jar Salads

We love using wide mouth quart-sized glass mason jars for our salads, but you can really use a variety of different containers, including plastic/tupperware type containers.  As long as your container is big enough to hold the ingredients and tall enough to stack the ingredients and keep the wet items (dressing, tomatoes, etc) away from the dry items (lettuce, kale, spinach, etc), container choice is up to you.

Easy Shortcuts for Mason Jar Prep

There are several things you can do ahead of time to really cut down on the prep work involved with making your salads.

  • Batch cook meat (for example, chicken) ahead of time. We use our Instant Pot or sometimes the slow cooker to cook up several boneless skinless chicken breasts at a time to use in salads. Have you take a look at all of our Instant Pot recipes lately?
  • Hard boil eggs ahead of time so they are ready to be sliced up for salads or simply added to the jar whole. You can hard boil eggs in 5 minutes in a pressure cooker.  See our pressure cooker hard boiled eggs post to learn how.
  • No time to cook?  Buy a rotisserie chicken at the store and simply cut it up for your salads.
