Magical Reindeer Food Recipe + Free Printable Poem Tag
Have you ever made reindeer food with your kids? This is one of our Christmas Eve traditions, and something we look forward to every year! Get our magical reindeer food recipe and printable tags!
As I do every year, it is time to share our recipe for reindeer food! You can even print this cute reindeer food poem if you’re making these as gifts.
Here are the printable poems you will get, plus a table topper if you want to set up a DIY reindeer food bar! (See below for the printables.)
When I was little, we did the cookies-and-milk-for-Santa thing. Every couple years we would think to throw a carrot or two outside for the reindeer to enjoy while Santa carried in our loot.
Then a few years ago I came across a recipe for Reindeer Food. Seemed simple enough – oatmeal and sugar crystals mixed together. You then sprinkle the food on your lawn on Christmas Eve. The “reindeer dust” (sugar) sparkles in the moonlight and helps the reindeer find your house. Cute!
So one day when I found myself with a rainy day and a daughter AND niece to entertain, I figured we could make our own reindeer food.
Magical Reindeer Food Ingredients
- Oatmeal
- Sugar crystals (any sprinkles will do!)
- Cinnamon (optional)
- empty baby food jar or ziploc bag
- poem tag (optional)
So we started out with our ingredients:
Dump them all in a bowl:
Stir!
We then filled up our baby food jars and covered them with tissue paper (you could also use fabric). The last step was to add the reindeer food poem tag!

Set up a DIY reindeer food make and take station!
Okay, I have to share this fun twist that I added two years ago. I set up the reindeer food DIY as a make and take station that the kids could do during our Christmas Eve dinner! It was so easy to set up (and you will find this table sign included in my printable files with the poems!).
I simply put the ingredients out with some bags and the kids had a great time making their own reindeer food. They each took a ziploc bag and wrote their name on the bag with a Sharpie marker.
Then they dumped the ingredients into their bag and closed the bag. A quick shake mixed everything together and I had several very happy kids on my hands.
So there you have it, magical reindeer food. Who knew, right?!
Here are the poems that goes with it – pick your fave!
Sprinkle on the lawn at night
The moon will make it sparkle bright
Santa’s reindeer fly and roam
This will guide them to your home
or
Take this magic food and sprinkle on the lawn,
Santa’s reindeer will travel miles before the dawn.
The smell of oats and the glitter path will guide them on their way
And you’ll wake up to Santa’s gifts on Christmas Day!
