Missing your usual stop at the local coffee shop? Intrigued by the latest drink to trend on social media? See how to make whipped coffee and enjoy a tasty coffee drink at home. It’s easier than you might think!

Have you been suffering from coffee-shop withdrawal? Fancy coffee drinks are a treat for many of us and with so many shops closed or offering limited menus, you might be dreaming of a tasty beverage. So, as often happens, this drink has gained recent popularity after trending on social media. From what I can trace, it specifically first popped up in this form on TikTok and then spread from there.

This is the simplest version we could find and when we recreated it here, we sampled the whipped coffee first. WOW! STRONG! SWEET! Might usher you into sugar shock.

Fear not, though. This drink gets better.  The premise is actually that the whipped coffee topping is to TOP a glass of milk. You can substitute a nut milk if you prefer.

Once we let the whipped coffee topping jive with the milk on the bottom, the taste was much better, much smoother and, dare I say it? Good!

We were trying to nail down exactly what the taste reminded us of and we settled on something similar to an iced caramel macchiato. You’ll have to try it and tell us what you think.

Easy Whipped Coffee Recipe

Give this whipped coffee recipe a try! Also known as Dalgona Coffee, this coffee house drink substitute is a great midday pick-me-up.
Prep Time10 mins
Course: Drinks
Servings: 2

  • hand mixer
  • two 16 oz glasses or mason jars

  • 1/4 c instant coffee
  • 1/4 c hot water
  • 1/4 c sugar
  • ice (enough to fill half of each glass)
  • 16 oz milk 8 oz per serving

  • You will use equal parts of all three ingredients, just as an FYI. We used 1/4 cup increments of each ingredient and got 2 servings, each served in a 16 oz mason jar.

  • Top with whipped coffee mixture.

  • Mix it ALL UP!!  Don't drink it until you give it a stir - you really want the coffee whip to intertwine with the milk, otherwise it will taste very strong and bitter.
  • Enjoy immediately.

If you decide to give this new trendy drink a try, let me know what you think. Again, we were NOT fans at first (when just sampling the whipped coffee portion).  So don’t be discouraged if you lick the beater (come on, you know you might) and it tastes like super sweet instant coffee.  LOL – because that’s exactly what IT IS!

Try to get past that taste and add your ice to your class (we filled ours about halfway with ice). Then fill your cup with some milk!

Now top the milk with that whipped coffee froth and let the whipped topping mix with the milk.  When I say MIX IT UP, I truly mean it.  Mix it ALL UP!!  Don’t drink it until you give it a stir – you really want the coffee whip to intertwine with the milk, otherwise it will taste very strong and bitter.  Now, give it a sip. When the milk hits the sweet topping, it transforms the drink into more of an iced macchiato taste in our opinion.

So let us know – like it? Or nah? It has a unique taste, that’s for sure. It’s also super DUPER easy to make and very very inexpensive to make.

  1. I love this recipe! I critiqued the recipe to my liking & it was amazing. Instead of milk I used a blend of 1/2 & 1/2 and my white chocolate mocha creamer. I know I’ll be making this again & again. Thank you.

    • Brewed coffee won’t work as well for this recipe, as you need the concentrated taste that the instant coffee holds. You’re essentially whipping the sugar into a fluff, and the instant coffee gives it a strong coffee flavor.

  2. It was one of the worst coffee I have ever tried. It tasted really really bitter. I just threw 1/4 cup Nescafé and sugar. Whoever posted this recipe should pay back our money.

    • It’s definitely not a drink for everyone’s taste buds, and if you don’t like strong coffee drinks, you may not like this one. However, the bitter taste is in the whipped coffee. You have to mix it up with milk in order to cut that bitter taste, otherwise, it’s not going to taste good at all (as I mentioned above).

  3. Very good recipe but you need to mention that you need to mix well the whipped coffee into the milk and ice, otherwise it is too bitter. We used erythritol and almond milk as substitutes and it was delicious!

    • Ah, yes!!  My post says that towards the bottom, but I just added it to the recipe card as well – thanks!!  Definitely needs a good mix before drinking!!

  4. 5 stars
Man, I could not get it fluffy! I whipped it for a good ten minutes and no luck! But I poured the liquid over iced milk anyway and I’m glad I did! Made sure to give it a good stir so it wouldn’t be bitter. It’s delicious! I added just a smidge if my go-to creamer as well. Perfect. Thank you, this does cure the coffee house, isolation blues!

    • I’m so glad you enjoyed it! I think the sugar is what contributes the most to the whipped consistency – maybe you could adjust the sugar a tad?

    • I can’t say for certain, but I’d imagine it would work! If you try it, definitely let us know how it turned out.
