Family Thanksgiving Activity

I really love Thanksgiving. There are many reasons that this holiday tops my faves and even comes close to “better than Christmas” on my list. Thanksgiving in our home and family is steeped with tradition. Many of those traditions of course remind me of my own mom, who always took holiday festivities to an all-new level. I find myself doing many of the things the way she used to do, because not only is it nice to pay tribute to her, but because I love making these traditions with my own kids.

Thanksgiving always reminds me of the beginning of a race. It tips off the holiday season with family time, good food, the start of Christmas cheer and sometimes other fun activities like high school football games. Thanksgiving usually means pumpkin bread baking and applesauce making – both of which we enjoy on Thanksgiving day and then freeze plenty more to enjoy throughout the winter months.

When we gather as an extended family every Thanksgiving, we of course always pause to reflect on the things that we are grateful and thankful for. There are always the obvious things, like family and friends. Sometimes the funniest contributions to this conversation come from the kids. I love hearing what they are thankful for! Beyond their parents and pets and the apple pie dessert, I can always count on my kids to be thankful for things that adults might overlook.

Lily is always thankful for ponies. Landon is always thankful for fire trucks. These and their other suggestions are always enough to get a laugh from the older crowd.

Family Thanksgiving Activity

This year I came up with this “We’re Thankful For…” free printable. I can’t wait to use it for OUR Thanksgiving feast! Here’s how to do this Family Thanksgiving Activity:

1. Save this free printable. It’s a PDF file, so you can either download it or just print right from the PDF page that opens when you click the link. Note: this is for personal use only.

2. Print the page on a white (or light)piece of paper).

3. Stick paper in a frame. I used a cheap plastic frame from IKEA.

4. As guests arrive, direct them to the frame and a dry erase marker and ask them to each write one or two things that they are thankful for.

5. Display your frame as part of your centerpiece or somewhere else where it can be easily seen as you feast and enjoy each other’s company!

Giving Thanks
