Yarn Vase Crafts

Yesterday I had the opportunity to co-host a DIY craft station with Savers Thrift at their brand new store in Willow Grove, PA.  What a blast!  It might have been snowing (WHAT?!) on the outside, but we were crafting up a storm on the inside.  The parking lot and store remained PACKED with shoppers during the entire 6 hours that I was at the store.  It was MOBBED with people taking cart after cart of bargains out the door…  and I watched with awe as (literally) hundreds of new items hit the sales floor every single hour.  Savers told me that they have 100,000 pieces of merchandise on the sales floor and add 10,000 new pieces every day.  It was incredible to see how much people were buying, yet the shelves and racks remained full.

As I planned this craft event with Savers, our goal was to pick a project that required materials typically found at a thrift store like Savers.  We wanted to show shoppers how easy it is to upcycle these items into something “new” – and bonus, keep it out of the landfills!

Glass pieces (vases, jars and other containers) can almost always be found on thrift store shelves.  This project will work with most any of them!

What you need:

  • Glass vase or jar
  • Yard (twine works well too)
  • Mod Podge
  • Paint brush
  • Hot glue gun (optional)

How to make:

  • Paint entire vase (the exterior) with a light coat of Mod Podge.
  • Wrap yarn around vase in any design or pattern you’d like.
  • Optional: use hot glue to affix the ends of yarn to the glass.

Dozens of beautiful vases were made, not a single one like the other!  We had kids and adults make vases and they all did such a great job!
