DIY Sponge Icepack

A new school year means a new round of packing snacks and lunches around here!  With a full-day kid and then a half-day preschool kid (!) heading to school this year, I’m always looking for any tips or tricks that might make life a little easier.  Typically when Lily takes her lunch to school we use a PackIt Cool Bag.  It’s always good to have a backup plan though – like for those mornings when you discover the PackIt Cool bag never made it back into the freezer and the bag is anything but “cool.”  I also love this icepack hack for field trip days when the kids need to bring a brown bagged lunch.

This hack is as simple as they come.  Hit up the store for a pack of sponges.  I usually go with whatever colorful pack is the cheapest at Walmart.  Sometimes I pick them up at the dollar store.

Run each sponge under water and place each sponge in a Ziploc sandwich bag.

Store sponges in the freezer until you are ready to pack a lunch! You can re-freeze these a bunch of times – they tend to last us for several months. I love having these sponges in the freezer for instant boo-boo icepacks as well!
