Traveling with kids is one big adventure – and if you’ve ever wrangled little ones through a theme park, festival, or busy airport, you know how quickly things can go from fun to frantic.
Big crowds? They can be overwhelming. And even the most attentive parents and well-behaved kids can experience those heart-pounding moments when someone takes a wrong turn or stops to check out a snack stand and loses sight of the group. Whether we’re spending the day at Disney, wandering Hersheypark, or checking out a jam-packed expo, the risk of separation is very real.
That’s why we started using this incredibly simple (and budget-friendly) safety trick: DIY emergency contact wristbands. They’re especially helpful if your child doesn’t have your phone number memorized yet.

What You Need:
- A permanent marker (like a Sharpie)
- A pack of blank Tyvek wristbands (they’re waterproof, tear-resistant, and super affordable)

How It Works:
Before heading out into a crowd, just write your phone number (and name, if you choose) on the wristband, then secure it on your child’s wrist. Done!
I usually put Landon’s name on the inside of the band and my phone number on the outside. You can leave off your child’s name if you’d rather keep that info private – just having your phone number visible is usually enough if someone finds your child and needs to contact you quickly.
Tyvek wristbands are great because:
- They’re waterproof (hello, beach days and waterpark fun!)
- They’re easy to toss into your travel bag, beach bag, or diaper bag
- They’re durable enough to last all day, even with wild and wiggly kiddos
- They’re cheap (you can grab a whole pack for just a few bucks)
We’ve used other contact tools in the past – like those temporary tattoos with your phone number printed on them – but we found that the wristbands are way more convenient. You don’t need water, wipes, or time to apply. Just grab a pen and go.

Bonus Tips for Travel Safety with Kids:
- Snap a quick pic of your child each morning before you head out. If you do get separated, you’ll have an up-to-date photo of exactly what they’re wearing.
- Establish a meeting point when you arrive at a crowded venue.
- Dress in bright colors or even matching shirts so your group stands out.
- Label water bottles or backpacks with contact info as a backup.
I hope you never have to experience that awful moment of realizing your child is not where you thought they were… but if it does happen, this wristband trick can give you a little extra peace of mind.
