DIY Anti-Dandruff Shampoo
Dry winter air has done a number on my skin this year. My skin is so dry, including my scalp. In the past, I would have fought dandruff flakes with a store-bought anti-dandruff shampoo that boasted a mega list of chemical ingredients. This time around, however, I had another weapon to try. I knew that tea tree essential oil has proven very successful in clearing up dandruff. Tea tree oil has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties that kill the bacteria that clogs hair follicles which cause itchy scalp irritation (along with flakes).
You can use a carrier oil (like shampoo, olive oil or coconut oil) along with tea tree oil to improve your scalp’s health. Simply add 10-15 drops of tea tree essential oil to 8 ounces of your carrier oil. I added 14 drops to an 8.5 oz bottle of Honest Co Shampoo. I love that shampoo because it is plant-based and contains jojoba and organic coconut oil, with no harsh chemicals.
Tea Tree Oil is also a wonderful natural deterrent to lice!
No matter what carrier oil you use, add your tea tree oil and shake to mix. In the shower, massage the mixture into your scalp. Let it sit on your scalp for 5 minutes, then rinse. I saw and felt a marked difference in my own hair after just two showers!
Once again, I am in no way, shape or form a doctor or aromatherapist. ALWAYS do your research from REPUTABLE sources when using essential oils to ensure you are using them safely. For example, some oils can be very dangerous to kids. EDUCATE yourself!
