We are no strangers to theatre life around here!

Lily (now a tween) has been gracing the local stages for everything from annual dance recitals to various musical products since she was three years old. For every one of those shows, we sent her off with a stage box loaded with her costumes and all sorts of small supplies that she might need throughout the production.

How to Make a Stage Box

During the last recital run, I took some pictures of what we were adding to our box and thought it might be helpful to any dance or theatre parents who are just starting out on this journey! For the actual stage box, we use a clear storage tote with a snap-on lid. I always use a clear tote so that Lily can see exactly what is where inside the tote and doesn’t have to dig to much for what she needs. The size of our tote depends on how many costumes she needs to bring back and forth. If it’s a musical production and costumes are staying at the theatre, we use a smaller tote. For dance recital, we sometimes have five or more costumes plus dance shoes, so the larger tote works better.

I love these rolling garment bags with hanging racks for the costumes, but they are on the pricey side!

I used several smaller containers and bags to pack up our supplies. We have one bag for makeup, another for hair accessories, and then a small tote that containers most of the other small supplies.

For the extra small items like bobby pins, hair ties and bandaids, I used mini containers with snap-on lids. I loaded up on almost all of our stage box supplies at the dollar store! After you put together your first box, you can just replace your supplies with fresh ones as needed.

After we load up these supplies into the stage box, we add whatever dance shoes and costumes that might be traveling from home to the theatre. Since we often end up with multiple costumes, I find it helpful to place a reminder of the order of numbers on the outside of the box.
