Best Things to Buy on Presidents Day

President’s Day has long been recognized as a holiday weekend (read: no school Monday for the kiddies) and also as a day when I never remember that the post office is closed until I check my (empty) mailbox.  Of course, there is another “event” that traditionally takes place at retailers nationwide (both in stores AND online) during this holiday weekend.  Yes, those President’s Day Weekend Sales that seem to bombard your email inbox throughout the first couple weeks of February.

But is there any truth to this?

Can you REALLY save money by shopping President’s Day Weekend Sales?

The short answer: YES

The long answer: Keep Reading

President’s Day Weekend sales can save you a bundle of money, IF you know what kind of deals to look for.  Just like those after-Christmas sales, the very best savings will be on certain types of products.  In no particular order, here are some of the best things to buy during President’s Day Weekend sales!

1. Cars – By mid-February, dealers have not only received their brand new inventory, they also more than likely still have some overstock models from the previous year that they would like to move.  Keep an eye out for some great buyer incentives that will save you a nice chunk of change if you’re in the market for a new car.  Incentives include big discounts off MSRP, rebates, low interest financing and more.

2. Travel – Look for BIG discounts this weekend on travel, especially for all-inclusive resorts.  The travel industry knows that the cold winter weather leads to dreaming of (and booking) Summer and Spring Break vacations, so they offer some of their best deals of the year during winter months.  Look for various deals from room discounts to airfare credit.

3. Winter Clothing and Accessories – If you have every tried to find a winter coat in February or early March (because, um, it’s still winter), you may have found bathing suits on store racks instead of snowsuits.  Retailers start putting their summer clothing lines out as early as January.  As President’s Weekend arrives, look for deep discounts on jackets, snowsuits, hats, gloves, etc.  Buy a size up from your child’s current size and put away for next winter.

4. Snow Removal Equipment – If it has been a wintry weather year, you might not be able to find much left in stock.  The rush of the last snowstorm may have cleared the hardware store out of shovels and the store now has their spring gardening equipment on display.  But on those years when Jack Frost has been quiet and you haven’t seen much snow, look for big discounts on everything from shovels to salt to snowblowers.

5. Indoor Furniture (including mattresses): These retailers just LOVE using President’s Day weekend to offer all sorts of discounts in the hopes of getting you into their stores.  If you need a new couch, love seat, mattress, etc, it’s a good time to shop.

6. Cheap Valentine’s Day Candy: President’s Day falls just days after Valentine’s Day and a few weeks before Easter.  Retailers are anxious to make the switch on their shelves from hearts to bunnies, so take look for deeply discounted candy.  Chocolate can be frozen and used for various baking recipes throughout the year, so anytime you can find it super cheap it’s worth picking up a few pieces!

7. Electronics including Smartphones and Computers: The new tech that was unveiled in January at the Consumer Electronics show has started arriving in stores. Retailers are anxious to get that new tech into your hands and will offer great incentives to make that happen.
