Can You Freeze a Hoagie

There are many fabulous upsides to having a big “potluck style” party.  One of my favorites being the incredible variety of food that guests can choose from.  When everyone brings a dish, it can be hard to decide what foods to pile on your plate!

This brings me to one of the only downsides – the leftovers.  Don’t get me wrong – I love leftovers!  But sometimes the sheer volume of food can be overwhelming.  We hate to waste food so we try to come up with recipes and other storage ideas to make it last longer than just party day.

At our 4th of July party we got 2 big deli trays from BJ’s.  While sandwiches were enjoyed by many of our guests, we still had a large amount of meats and cheese leftover.  In particular, we had a lot of Provolone cheese and Italian meats left.  We love Italian hoagies and that got us to thinking of how we could possibly make this meat and cheese last.

That’s when Bob had the idea to assemble hoagies and FREEZE them!  We can take them out when we need a quick lunch, etc.  I know they will come in super handy on weekends that we go camping.  On those weekends we typically head out after work on Friday, arriving at the campground starving and beyond ready for dinner.  These will work perfectly!

If you’re going to freeze hoagies, there are really only 2 things you need to remember:

  • Freeze them DRY (no mayo, oil, lettuce, tomato, onion, etc – basically no wet ingredients).  Meat and cheese ONLY!  You can add the rest when you are ready to eat them.
  • DOUBLE wrap the hoagies in aluminum foil to ensure they don’t become stale in the freezer.

Here is a finished hoagie, ready to be wrapped!  Our hoagies were made with: Provolone cheese, Genoa Salami, Slicing Pepperoni, Capicola, Prosciutto, Mortadella, salt, pepper and Oregano.
