This morning after a whirlwind shopping trip (2 grocery stores among others) Lily Bean and I returned home exhausted. Lucky for her, a nap was in her future. While she slept the afternoon away, I continued to prepare our house for the annual visit from my dad, my stepmom and my stepgrandmother. They are in their 4 wheel drive sleigh as I type this – traveling east from Texas then Arkansas and will be staying with us for several days.
This is actually good for my chronic procrastination because it forces me to do the chores that I typically leave until Christmas in advance. So when I surveyed my progress today, I was pleasantly surprised to see that cookies have been baked, presents have been wrapped, ornaments have been made and most of the house is clean and presentable. (I DO have until tomorrow night for that real last minute cleaning!)
When I gave our gift pile a second glance, it dawned on me that so many of them had been purchased with deals I found on daily deal sites, namely Groupon. Seriously… what did we do before sites like Groupon? I don’t know about you, but Groupon has changed the way I think about date nights, gift giving and even traveling.
Traveling: I use Groupons to purchase meals and other entertainment in cities we will be traveling to. Not only do I save big on the purchase, but it’s like prepaying for parts of our vacation that you can’t typically prepay. This results in less out-of-pocket-spending on the actual trip – which comes in handy when the kid suckers me into a Snow White souvenir at Disney or Biker Bob suckers me into one of those turkey legs bigger than my head.
Date night: Though it doesn’t happen very often, Biker Bob and I do steal away for the occasional date night. We have used Groupons to save 50% or more on food as we discover new restaurants (last meal – Bensi in North Wales, PA – INCREDIBLE!). Half off movie tickets and more!
Gifts: Birthday, holiday or anytime – I have grabbed more gifts on Groupon than I can count. One of my very favorite gifts that I purchased via Groupon was for hand stamped metal jewelry that Lily gave to her aunt and her grandmothers last year. It was such a special present and unlike anything I had seen before. Plus, I scooped them up with a discount – total win/win!
