Honestech VHS to DVD 4.0 Deluxe Review

We have dozens upon dozens of tapes that are filled with family home movies. Some are as old as I am and are trapped on antique VHS tapes that degrade more and more with each viewing. For years I have been meaning to transfer these movies off of tapes and put them on DVDs for my family. You will pay megabucks to have someone else transfer your old VHS movies to DVD and guess what? You can do it yourself!

I was super excited to receive a copy of Honestech DVD 4.0 Deluxe. I couldn’t wait to give it a try to see if I could really get some old home movies from VHS into my computer. Once the movies are in your computer, the possibilities are endless- you can burn them to DVDs, Blu-Rays, or even upload them to the web, for example YouTube. (Note- you can only burn them if your computer has the burner on it!)

Retailing for just $79.99, this product includes: a CD with the movie capture/editing software and a capture device with USB cable. (You provide your own RCA cables and/or S Video cables.) You then have the choice- you can connect your computer to a camcorder or VCR! The set-up looks something like this:

I tried two different captures. First, I connected my camcorder (uses mini-dv tapes) and captured some video from the summer! I was able to easily capture the video and upload it to YouTube. Here were are at Niagara Falls in July!

But here is something even cooler. I hunted through some of my family’s oldest videos.. and unearthed one that I actually have no recollection of ever seeing. Ever. Talk about a fun treasure to uncover! So here I am, circa summer 1983, Mom Mom’s #1 girl. My grandmother passed away just 2 years after this video was taken, so it’s especially bittersweet because I have very few real memories of her.
